BISHOP AND PASTOR TO BE A FATHER DURING THIS PANDEMIC

The Canon Law Society of Malaysia - Singapore - Brunei held their virtual gathering on 25 & 26 May 2021. Rev. Fr. Dr. I Made Markus Suma, J.C.L., a canonist from the Archdiocese of Makassar, Indonesia was invited as guest speaker. He shared on the significance of Bishops and Priests being a proper pastor by being a Father during the pandemic.

He emphasized on the parish priest's obligation of ensuring that the word of God is proclaimed in its entirety to those living in the parish by means of his homily on Sundays and holy days of obligation. He is to take care that the Blessed Eucharist is the center of the parish assembly. So that he may fulfill his office of pastor diligently, he is to strive to know the faithful entrusted to his care, to visit their families sharing especially in their cares, anxieties and sorrows.

He quoted Pope Francis' homily on Holy Thursday (2013), "As shepherds, the parish priest must have the sheep’s odour".
